Mack Grout

BIOGRAPHY

Mack Grout was born in Seattle, Washington. He grew up living in the Pacific Northwest, and began taking private instruction on the piano at age four. He played classical piano until he was fourteen, and then he started focusing more on jazz and modern music studies with Belfair based pianist Larry Key as a mentor. Through high school Mack performed as much as possible. He was involved in all the music groups that were offered at his high school, playing piano in jazz choirs and trumpet in orchestra and jazz band.

Throughout these years, Mack won seventeen outstanding soloist awards at jazz festivals in Washington, Oregon and California. This whole time he was also leading his own trio, playing around town at public events such as the national Relay for Life charity events and at festivals such as the Sequim Lilac festival and the Kitsap County Fair. His senior year in high school Mack won the Outstanding Instrumentalist award at the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival. That year he also won the international Louis Armstrong Award, as well as scholarships to Berklee College of Music, and Cornish College of Music for musical ability as well as academic achievement.

Mack now attends Cornish College of Music where he studies piano performance and composition with his mentor Denney Goodhew. Mack also studies voice with Kelly Harland and Beth Winter. Mack runs a private instruction studio and teaches a full load of aspiring pianists, while working as a professional musician in the northwest. One of the great things about Mack as a musician is his versatility in diverse musical genre’s, and his ability to absorb music and interpret it with his own personal vision.

Mack has performed with notables such as Christian McBride, Bobby Watson, Robin Eubanks, Jim Knapp, Jovino Santos-Neto, Julian Priester, Pete Christliebe and Ingrid Jensen. Mack has performed up and down the west coast at many notable jazz clubs and theaters such as Tulas, JBL Theater, Jazz Bones and many more.

The Mack Grout Band has been performing together for several years, and they have played all around the northwest. Tim Carey plays acoustic and electric bass, Adam Kessler plays drums, and Brendan O’Donnell plays guitar. The four of them met while achieving music degrees at Cornish.
